In today’s competitive market, organizations are increasingly turning to lean to lower costs and increase efficiency in their processes. While implementing lean is extremely effective it is not a simple panacea. Instead, the lean solutions should be tailored to fit the specific challenges that the organization faces. Consequently, an assessment of the current state is a vital first step in any lean initiative. The purpose of the lean assessment is to uncover the wastes in the process. This includes Muda, the 8 wastes of defects, overproduction, waiting, non-utilized talent, transportation, inventory, motion, extra-processing. Mura, which is unevenness in the process and Muri, which is overburden of the resources. The way to determine these wastes is through qualitative observations and interviews and quantitative lean six sigma tools such as process mapping and data analysis.
